We’re bringing the bakery to you today with our cherry turnover recipe!
We love this pastry recipe because it is perfect for a brunch spread or also fantastic as a dessert!
We’re taking a modern spin on this easy turnover recipe by cutting out some of the extra sugar.
By making your own cherry filling vs. using canned pie filling, you can cut back on extra sugar and preservatives.
We decided to make our filling completely sugar free by using Purecane all natural sweetener.
This sweetener comes right from a cane sugar plant, but it is fermented to remove the sugar. It tastes just like sugar but it is sugar-free, non-GMO, diabetic and keto friendly.
If you like the idea of sugar free desserts or just simply saving some calories by replacing some of the sugar, check out our healthy peach crisp recipe, raspberry mini cheesecake bites, or our raspberry lemon pound cake recipe.
We don’t always make sweets in the morning but a good scones recipe always pairs well with morning coffee. If you love cherry, you might also like this gluten free clafoutis recipe with cherry.
We’ve also created this recipe two ways: by baking them in the oven as well as making the cherry turnovers in an air fryer.
You can also use other methods to make Cherry Hand Pies or switch up the fruit for berry or peach hand pies.
Baked cherry turnovers
If you choose to make turnovers the traditional way, simply cook your pastry for 25 minutes at 350 degrees F.
You’ll know when it’s done when the pastry puffs up and the top turns golden brown.
Air fryer breakfast recipe
This cherry turnover recipe can also be made in an air fryer.
We’re huge fans of using an air fryer for recipes that we want to be crispy, yet forgo additional oil, like our air fryer boneless buffalo wing recipe and our air fryer chicken fried steak recipe.
For this recipe though, the air fryer just helps the to make this recipe is half the time!
Everyone knows that when you’re making turnovers at home the longer you have to wait the more torturous it is.
To make this air fryer breakfast recipe simply make your cherry turnovers just like you’d bake them, preheat your air fryer to 350 degrees and pop it in your air fryer basket for 12 minutes or until the puff pastry rises and turns golden brown.
Psst… forget breakfast, add this cherry turnover recipe to your list of favorite air fryer dessert recipes while you’re at it. You may also like Air Fryer Doughnuts, Air Fryer French Toast, or Air Fryer Cinamon Rolls too.
This world could use more easy air fryer desserts these days!
Air fryer turnovers vs baked turnovers
We did a taste test between the air fryer turnover and a traditionally baked turnover.
The air fryer turnover (pictured left) was done in half the time! It was still flaky and delicious.
We did find that the oven baked cherry turnovers (pictured right) were a bit flakier and fluffier based on the additional time for the puff pastry to rise.
All in all, we probably preferred the baked turnovers since they were fluffier, but both were delicious!
Cherry Turnover Recipe
Makes 8 turnovers
Ingredients:
- One package of puff pastry, 2 sheets (thawed)
- 1 pound frozen cherries, pitted, about 3 cups (you can also use fresh or canned cherries in water)
- 1 tablespoon Purecane zero calorie sweetener
- 1 tablespoon corn starch
- Splash of water
- 1 egg
- 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- ¼ teaspoon almond extract
- Preheat your oven or air fryer to 350 degrees F.
- In a sauce pan on medium heat, mix together the cherries with the purecane sweetener. Simmer for 10 minutes until the cherries start to release their juices. We used frozen cherries, if you use fresh cherries or canned cherries this will take less time.
- In a small bowl, stir together the corn starch and the water.
- Add the corn starch slurry to the cherry turnover filling.
- Simmer for 2 minutes until the sauce starts to thicken. Then remove from heat to cool.
- Roll out your puff pastry dough and cut them into quarters.
- Use a spoon to fill the center of the puff pastry square with filling. About 1-2 tablespoons.
- Fold over the pull pastry dough diagonally and seal edges with a fork.
- Scramble an egg and brush the tops of the turnovers with your egg wash.
- Spray the bottom of your air fryer with oil and bake the turnovers in the air fryer for 12 minutes (or 25 minutes in the oven). Once they are golden brown remove them from the oven to cool.
- Mix together the heavy cream, almond extract, and powdered sugar to create a glaze and drizzle it on your cooled cherry turnovers.

February 2, 2023 at 11:03 pmWondering if I could use powdered confectioners stevia blend. I think there might be a chemical reaction with sugar (to make a good glaze) that you don’t get with artificial sweeteners
