Of course, Texas is known for their BBQ.
However, a few other popular food groups are actually even more prominent: Tacos, Queso, and Salsa.
Everyone always has an opinion on which restaurant has the most authentic taco or tastiest queso.
It only seemed fitting that we decided to take on a grill recipe with a twist on both of these iconic foods: A Queso Taco Burger!
For this recipe, we reached for a jar of Jaime’s Spanish Village, a Texas-based queso and salsa company that started as a restaurant in 1931 right near the University of Texas here in Austin and has been jarring their products for over 30 years.
If you can’t find Jaime’s in the refrigerated section at your local grocery store (If you’re in Austin find it at Central Market and Wheatsville), you can also order it online here.
What we love about this recipe is that the beef patty takes on a lot of taco flavors by adding a bit of salsa and the taco seasoning.
The roasted poblano peppers elevate the burger, the queso is super creamy, and the tortilla chips add just the right amount of texture.
It’s officially summer and getting so hot outside that we always head to the grill instead of heating up the kitchen.
We’re hoping this also helps to cut down our astronomical electric bills during the summer months!
Invite over a few friends, grill up these burgers, and spice up an ordinary night. If you’re feeling extra festive, whip up these margarita jello shots and really make it a party!
Taco Burgers with Roasted Poblanos and Queso
Makes 4 burgers
1.5 pounds of ground beef
1 packet of taco seasoning
3 tablespoons Jaime’s Spanish Village Medium Red Salsa
1 cup of Jaime’s Spanish Village Chile Con Queso
4 hamburger buns
4 slices of pepperjack cheese
2 poblano peppers
½ cup crushed tortilla chips
Start by gently mixing your ground beef, taco seasoning, and salsa together in a large bowl using your hands, until it is combined. Be mindful to try to not overwork the meat. Press into 4 patties. Heat your grill to medium heat and start to cook your burgers. Gently baste your poblano peppers with olive oil and place them on the grill as well, cooking until the skin starts to char.
If you don’t have access to a grill, don’t fret. While your burgers are cooking in a skillet, simply place your poblano peppers on a baking sheet and broil on high until the skin starts to char. Remove from the oven, flip the peppers, and broil the other side until charred. Remove from the oven to cool, and then slice.
When the burgers are about ready to your desired doneness, add the sliced hamburger buns to the grill to toast the insides of the rolls and add the pepperjack cheese to the burger patties.
Now to assemble the taco burgers! Add the burger to the bun and then top with the sliced, roasted poblanos. Spoon on the Jaime’s queso cheese (you’ll want to zap this in the microwave first so it’s easier to drizzle). Top the queso with crushed tortilla chips. This helps to add some nice texture, another flavor profile, and reminds you of a taco shell. Add additional cilantro and avocado. It’s as easy as that!
We hope you add this grill recipe to your next cookout or weekday dinner. It’s a cheeseburger that packs in all your favorite taco flavors!
