Reno has long been known as the Biggest Little City in the World, a nickname that feels increasingly appropriate when you look at what is happening on the dining scene.
We love experiencing The Best Things to do in Reno Tahoe for Couples, and in between all the nature and nightlife, you’re able to fill your time (and stomachs) with some pretty incredible food.
This is a city where a historic Basque restaurant can share the spotlight with a Korean fusion favorite, a modern Italian restaurant, an artisan bakery, a swanky steakhouse, some serious cocktail bars and some of Northern Nevada’s most impressive fine dining rooms.
In other words, Reno is no longer a place where you have to settle for a casino buffet when you’re hungry like other cities with casinos.
That might be one of the biggest surprises for anyone visiting for the very first time.
Reno’s food scene has grown tremendously in recent years, with independent chefs, ambitious restaurateurs and creative bartenders bringing new energy to the city.
Food & Wine has even recognized Reno as one of America’s emerging food cities, highlighting the combination of innovative restaurants, bakeries, cocktail lounges and enduring local institutions that are giving the city a culinary renaissance.
And the best part? Reno is wonderfully manageable, and feels like everything is within a max ten minute drive from each other.
The city’s relatively compact size means you can squeeze in a scratch made bakery breakfast, leisurely lunch, an afternoon cocktail happy hour, dinner at one of the best restaurants in Reno and a nightcap without spending half your vacation sitting in traffic.

Located in Reno’s Midtown District, Arario serves Korean fusion with a menu that combines Korean flavors with global influences, creating exactly the sort of playful food that makes Reno’s food scene so much fun.
The restaurant’s menu is built around dishes that are meant to be shared, making it a particularly great place for a date night or dinner with friends. Think sizzling bibimbap, Korean-style dumplings, bulgogi and other dishes with big, punchy flavors.
One of the things that makes Arario memorable is its willingness to have fun. This isn’t Korean cuisine presented with unnecessary formality. It’s colorful, energetic and approachable.
And then there are Arario’s kimchi fries.
If you see them on the menu, order them. Seriously.

Beaujolais Bistro
For a taste of France without booking a flight across the Atlantic, make your way to Beaujolais Bistro.
Chef Bill Gilbert created the restaurant around his dream of bringing an authentic French bistro to Reno, and the result is a warm, intimate restaurant where French technique and high-quality ingredients take center stage.
The menu changes frequently, with the kitchen emphasizing fresh local and seasonal ingredients.
This is the kind of place where dinner feels like an occasion even when you aren’t celebrating anything. The setting is romantic, both inside the moody dining room and outside on their historic patio across from the river.
We started with the beet salad with arugula and goat cheese.
It’s elegantly plated and almost looks like tartare.
French onion soup is another natural choice when available, especially when you want something cozy and deeply satisfying.
For entrees, we opted for the French cassoulet, a hearty dish with beans, pork belly, and sausage and topped with a confit duck leg.
Another French classic that we savored was the moules frites. The french fries came in a giant mound with an irresistible aioli and paired perfectly with our glasses of sparkling wine.
The wine list is another reason to visit. Beaujolais Bistro offers more than 150 wines, giving you plenty of opportunities to find a bottle that complements your meal or special occasion.
Perenn Bakery
Perenn Bakery was one of our favorite bakeries from our first trip to Reno, and it’s only continued getting better.
We loved it so much we went multiple times!
Perenn has become one of the defining names in Reno’s modern food scene, and Food & Wine specifically highlighted the bakery as part of the city’s culinary transformation.
Founded by Culinary Institute of America alumni Aubrey and Tyler O’Laskey, Perenn has helped elevate Reno’s bakery culture with beautifully executed breads, pastries, sandwiches, coffee and sweet treats.
This is the place to start your morning with a pastry and coffee before heading outdoors.
One of the bakery’s irresistible creations is the croissant cookie, a buttery, flaky pastry that combines the laminated texture of a croissant with the comforting sweetness of a perfect cookie.
Calling it a buttery art form might sound dramatic, but once you’ve eaten one, you’ll understand.
We must also add that the pan suisse was probably the best rendition we’ve tasted outside of Paris. Dunk it in your latte for the perfect way to start your day.
Perenn also makes an excellent stop for a casual breakfast or lunch. Grab a coffee, something flaky, and perhaps a breakfast sandwich or pastry before heading toward the mountains.
With multiple Reno locations, including Midtown, Rancharrah and Perenn at the Museum, it’s easy to squeeze in a visit during a busy day of exploring.
Living Room Cocktail Bar
Reno’s cocktail culture has matured right alongside its restaurant scene, and Living Room is the sort of cocktail bar that illustrates why.
This is where you go when you want to trade the noise of a casino floor for a more intimate drink-focused experience.
Think comfortable seating that feels like it was reborn from the 1970s, thoughtful cocktails and an atmosphere designed for lots of vibes and lots of conversation.
It’s a great place to begin a night out or to settle in after dinner. For couples, this is exactly the kind of bar where one cocktail can turn into two because nobody is particularly interested in checking the clock.
At night you might even catch a DJ spinning vinyl in this retro cocktail bar.
Reno’s cocktail scene has become increasingly inventive, with bartenders putting the same attention into drinks that chefs put into food.
That means fresh ingredients, house-made elements, interesting spirits and cocktails that go far beyond the standard vodka soda.
If your idea of a perfect evening includes a beautifully made drink and a bar that’s a unique destination, put Living Room on your Reno list.
Bimini Steakhouse at Peppermill
Located inside Peppermill Reno, Bimini Steakhouse is one of the city’s classic choices for an upscale steakhouse experience.
The restaurant specializes in wood-grilled steaks and seafood, with an extensive wine collection and a polished dining room that makes it particularly well suited for anniversaries, birthdays, post conference business meals, and other special occasions.
The menu includes classic steakhouse favorites along with seafood and indulgent side dishes.
We started with the french onion soup which was completely covered in buttery, flaky puff pastry. We loved this unique twist on one of our favorite French classics.
Then we indulged in the seafood platter featuring oysters, crab legs, a lobster tail, cocktail shrimp, and tuna poke.
There are so many steak options to choose from, including wagyu, but we couldn’t resist getting the tournades rossini, which is actually listed on the appetizer menu.
This indulgent dish pairs wagyu beef with foie gras. It’s rich, it’s delicious, and pure perfection. We love it because it’s an absolute classic, and so rare to find on menus now.
Bimini embraces the theatrical side of fine dining with tableside preparations including Steak Diane, Bananas Foster, and Cherries Jubilee.
That tableside element is part of the fun. Dinner here isn’t simply about receiving a plate of food, it is about the entire experience.
For a romantic evening, start with cocktails, order a bottle of wine, share a steakhouse side and save room for dessert and post dinner gaming.
Oceano
If your idea of a great night out involves sushi (and we mean lots of it) Oceano at Peppermill Reno deserves a spot on your Reno dining itinerary.
While the restaurant is known for its seafood-focused menu, one of the biggest draws for sushi lovers is its all-you-can-eat sushi experience.
And when we say all-you-can-eat, we’re talking about the kind of meal where you can settle in, study the menu and decide just how much sushi you can reasonably fit into one sitting.
We love that because Oceano is part of a large casino with tons of customers. They get some of the best sushi fish suppliers from Japan, and get it delivered fresh all the time.
The all-you-can-eat sushi experience is particularly fun for couples because it turns your meal into an opportunity to sample a little bit of everything.
Rather than committing to one or two rolls, you can order multiple selections and discover which ones become your new favorites. It’s a great way to try different flavor combinations without feeling like you have to choose just one.
Start with some classic favorites like miso soup, edamame, and wings, then branch out and try specialty rolls. Add sashimi or nigiri if that’s your preference, and don’t be afraid to mix things up as you work your way through the menu.
For sushi fans, this is one of those dining experiences where the best strategy is to arrive hungry.
The all-you-can-eat format also makes Oceano a particularly good choice for a group dinner, although couples can have just as much fun turning it into a leisurely date night.
Just remember the golden rule of all-you-can-eat sushi: pace yourself. You don’t want to fill up on the first few rolls and discover that you’ve barely scratched the surface of the menu!
Louis’ Basque Corner
If there is one restaurant that tells you why Reno is different from other Western cities, it is Louis’ Basque Corner.
The restaurant opened in 1967 and has become one of Reno’s most recognizable culinary institutions.
Its history is tied to the Basque immigrants who came to the American West from the Pyrenees between France and Spain, bringing their food traditions with them.
And then there is the Picon Punch.
According to Food & Wine, the Picon Punch offers a glimpse into the American West’s Basque culture. It is an essential part of the Basque-American dining experience and one of those cocktails that feels like it comes with a story attached.
Louis’ Basque Corner proudly calls itself the home of the Picon Punch, and the restaurant’s history and menu make it easy to understand why.
The Picon Punch was actually just named the Nevada state cocktail.
The restaurant serves its meals family-style, meaning this isn’t a place where everyone quietly guards their own plate.
Food arrives to be shared, with traditional dishes including oxtails, lamb chops, sweetbreads, steak, fish and other Basque specialties. The meal comes with abundant sides, bread, beans, fries, soup and other accompaniments.
We were seated at a communal table next to some retired locals who quickly became fast friends.
That family-style format is part of what makes Louis Basque Corner such a great place for a group or a couple who doesn’t mind sharing.
Order the Picon Punch, try some traditional basque cuisine, and embrace the fact that you’re experiencing a piece of Reno history and culture.
Beloved’s Bread
Bread is having a moment in Reno.
Beloved’s Bread has developed a loyal following through farmers markets and its bakery cafe, where you can find beautifully made breads and baked goods.
The bakery’s Reno cafe is located on Plumb Lane, while the business also continues to participate in area farmers markets.
Beloved’s is the sort of place that makes you want to reorganize your entire day around breakfast.
Pick up a loaf for later (the miso sesame sourdough is a gamechanger), grab a pastry for the road (we adored the seasonal peaches and cream croissant) and order a breakfast dish that pairs nicely with coffee.
It’s especially appealing for travelers staying somewhere with a kitchen or anyone planning a picnic. Grab some bread, cheese, fruit and other provisions, then head outside.
That’s one of the easiest ways to combine Reno’s food scene with the outdoors.
Roasted Duck Noodles
Reno’s food scene isn’t only about polished dining rooms.
Sometimes the best thing you can eat is tucked inside a strip mall.
Roasted Duck Noodles is exactly that kind of discovery.
Located on Moana Lane, this restaurant specializes in Cantonese roasted meats, noodle soups and dim sum. The restaurant’s duck has amazing flavor with crackling skin and rich juices.
The half duck was served traditionally, where you stuff the sliced meat with spring onions, cucumber, and sauce inside tender crepe pancakes.
We also thought the pork and homemade shrimp shu mai was some of the best dim sum that we’ve tasted.
This is casual, affordable and intensely satisfying.
And that’s another reason Reno is such a fun food city, you can have an elaborate steak dinner one night and eat noodles from a neighborhood restaurant the next.
Smoke Door
Smoke Door is where you go when the craving for Japanese flavors meets the desire for smoky, deeply savory food.
Located just outside Reno on the stateline and next to Lake Tahoe, this restaurant feels like a highly sophisticated food destination.
If you are traveling with someone who loves Japanese cuisine, this is a particularly fun stop.
The restaurant started as a location in Tokyo, and has since added this additional location in the Reno Lake Tahoe area.
That means you can count on fresh fish being flown in regularly from Japan’s famous fish market, an excellent sake selection, and Japanese food that reaches far beyond typical sushi rolls with a modern, elevated spin.
Many dishes, including vegetables, are smoked on the custom almond-wood live fire grill located in the back of the open-air kitchen.
Ordering the pre-fixe menu comes with a similar format for the types of dishes you’ll be served but they evolve based on seasonal ingredients and innovations from the chef.
That means that while the menu “stays the same” the dishes could be different from one visit to another depending on the season.
Come hungry and expect big flavors.
Atlantis Steakhouse
If one steakhouse isn’t enough, the Atlantis Steakhouse is another great choice in Reno.
Located inside Atlantis Casino Resort Spa, the restaurant has earned a reputation for polished fine dining, exceptional steaks and attentive service.
Atlantis notes that it is northern Nevada’s only Forbes Four-Star restaurant, and its menu features prime steaks along with American and Japanese Wagyu.
The setting is elegant, the service is attentive and the menu is designed for indulgence.
Order a premium cut, add a side or two for the table and pair it with an old fashioned or a perfectly paired glass of wine.
Death & Taxes
If you love cocktails, do not make the mistake of treating Death & Taxes as simply a place to grab a drink before dinner.
This is a destination in its own right.
Located on Cheney Street, Death & Taxes is a cocktail bar specializing in rare and sought-after whiskey, and perfectly crafted cocktails.
The cocktail menu is extensive and creative, with drinks built around spirits, house-made ingredients, fruit, herbs, tea and unexpected flavor combinations.
This is where Reno’s cocktail scene gets serious, so serious other bartenders in town told us about how specific they are with their measurements and planning.
The best strategy? Let the bartender guide you.
Tell them what spirits and flavors you enjoy and see where the conversation goes.
That kind of interaction is one of the reasons independent cocktail bars are so much fun.
Amari
We discovered Amari randomly on an impromptu cocktail crawl strolling from Death & Taxes to Curse of Cain, and it was such a happy accident.
This European-inspired cocktail bar is known as the little Italian sister to Death & Taxes cocktail bar.
It has a charming patio that practically begs you to sit and stay awhile. As the Italians call it “il dolce far niente”, which translates to “the sweetness of doing nothing”.
Choose an italian amaro or a perfectly crafted martini and relax with a side of snacks and great conversation.
Bistro Napa
Located on the second floor of Atlantis Casino Resort Spa, Bistro Napa is another standout for anyone looking for elevated dining.
The restaurant focuses on contemporary California Wine Country cuisine with an emphasis on fresh flavors and global influences. Mediterranean, Latin American and Asian traditions all make appearances on the menu.
Bistro Napa also has an impressive wine program, with a 4,000-bottle cellar and sommelier assistance for pairings. The restaurant currently holds Wine Spectator’s 2026 Best of Award of Excellence.
But the real can’t-miss is their Social Hour.
From 4 to 6 p.m. daily, Bistro Napa offers a social-hour menu with half-price appetizers, specialty cocktails and 40 premium wines by the glass.
That’s a pretty compelling happy hour and locals and hotel guests alike line up outside the space to take advantage of the deal.
For dinner, they offer a large selection of “steaks and chops’ which even included interesting options such as Colorado lamb chops as well as elk chops.
Bistro Napa manages to be upscale without feeling stuffy, making it a perfect place for a date night.
Toro Bravo
If Mexican flavors are calling your name, Toro Bravo is one of downtown Reno’s most exciting choices.
Toro Bravo is a Mexican steakhouse and cevicheria, combining contemporary cuisine with Mexican flavors and traditions while emphasizing local and seasonal ingredients.
Its beverage program follows the same philosophy, with artisanal spirits and cocktails inspired by Mexican culture, like the carajillo, our favorite cocktail and a great substitute for an espresso martini.
The menu brings together succulent steaks, ceviche and other Mexican-inspired dishes, making it easy to build a meal around contrasting flavors and textures.
During lunch we started with the ooey, gooey queso fundito and followed it with the flavorful and authentic birria tacos.
Your stomach will be satisfied and completely stuffed
Then, walk it off with a stroll along the Truckee Riverwalk, an iconic 1-2 punch.
Curse of Cain
Curse of Cain is the cocktail bar that needs a spot on your Instagram feed.
The interior design of this chic cocktail bar brings bright pops of pink and green, which feels like a tropical getaway in itself.
The cocktail menu features libations that are just as vibrant.
Start with their Apple Bottom Jeans cocktail which balances white rum with green apple, lemongrass, mint, lime, and soda water.
It’s an elevated take on a mojito that you never knew you needed.
This is the kind of cocktail-focused destination that fits naturally into Reno’s increasingly sophisticated bar culture.
If you’re planning a night out in Midtown, it’s an easy addition to a Reno bar crawl.
1864 Tavern
For a cocktail bar with a little history behind it, make your way to 1864 Tavern in downtown Reno.
Named for the year Nevada became the 36th state, this intimate neighborhood bar embraces the spirit of The Biggest Little City with a cocktail program that feels both creative and approachable.
The atmosphere is historic posh with velvet wingback chairs and chandeliers, but still intimate and inviting.
The cocktail menu is the main attraction, with bartenders putting thoughtful spins on classic drinks and creating inventive combinations for adventurous drinkers.
The 1859 cocktail features Japanese whiskey, miso honey, and lemon and it’s served in an adorable bear-shaped glass.
For visitors exploring Reno’s growing cocktail scene, 1864 Tavern is a reminder that you don’t have to head to Las Vegas or New York City for a memorable drink. Reno has developed plenty of its own personality behind the bar.
Madein Food & Drink Collective
For a restaurant that captures the spirit of Reno’s modern food scene, add Madein Food & Drink Collective to your dining list.
Located in West Reno, Madein is a neighborhood-focused restaurant where thoughtfully prepared food, craft drinks and a relaxed atmosphere come together.
Madein puts a heavy emphasis on quality ingredients and seasonal cooking, with a menu that changes with the seasons and makes the most of local produce whenever possible.
The food draws inspiration from Italian cuisine and Mediterranean flavors, with handmade pastas, salads, focaccia sandwiches and other dishes designed to be shared.
We dined during lunch and took advantage of the 2 for $20 special, which felt like a steal.
The Alpine sandwich was mortadella, stracciatella, pistachio spread and arugula loaded between soft and fluffy homemade focaccia bread. The sandwich was served with their signature MadeIn salad or a cup of rotating soups.
Another winner was Pablo’s Feast. This focaccia sandwich featured tender sliced porchetta, broccoli rabe, and tomato jam alongside arugula and stracciatella cheese. Delish!
The house-made pastas are only available at dinner, but we’ve heard that they are particularly worth seeking out.
It’s sophisticated enough for a date night but never feels overly formal.
The drinks are another reason to linger. Madein features a full bar with cocktails, wine and beer, making it easy to turn dinner into a full evening out.
R Town Pizza
Sometimes, after a day of exploring Reno Tahoe, you don’t want an elaborate tasting menu or an upscale steakhouse. You want pizza.
And for a fun, casual stop, R Town Pizza is the kind of place that delivers exactly that.
R Town Pizza has built a following around its creative Detroit-style pizzas, approachable atmosphere and seriously generous portions.
It is a great place to go when you’re traveling with friends, enjoying a family vacation or simply looking for a laid-back dinner after spending the day outdoors.
The menu goes beyond the standard pepperoni and cheese combination, with specialty pizzas offering plenty of toppings and bold flavor combinations.
We even ordered a pizza topped with homemade meatballs, pepperoncini, and fresh mozzarella.
Of course, traditionalists can still build a pizza around their favorite ingredients, while adventurous eaters can explore some of R Town’s more creative options.
Beyond pizza they offer grinder sandwiches, salads, and even a confit Pterosaur wing, which is a 1.5 pound turkey knuckle “wing” that has been confited for 10 hours and tossed in your favorite wing sauce. It’s bigger than your head!
For couples, R Town Pizza can be a particularly fun change of pace during a Reno getaway. After a few nights of fine dining and elaborate cocktails, sometimes sharing a pizza in a casual atmosphere is exactly what you need.
Order a pie, grab a cold drink and relax by playing the arcade games inside the restaurant.
The restaurant also fits nicely into Reno’s broader food culture. One of the things that makes the Reno’s food scene so enjoyable is that you don’t have to spend a fortune to find great food.
You can have a memorable special-occasion dinner one night and enjoy an affordable neighborhood pizza the next.

There was a time when travelers might have thought of Reno primarily as a casino destination.
That’s increasingly outdated.
