If you’re looking for a fast, healthy appetizer, air fryer shishito peppers are where it’s at.
Our air fried shishito peppers are charred and blistered just like what you’d find at a local sushi restaurant.
Our secret? Our shishito peppers recipe is made with an air fryer so it’s healthy, faster, and less messy.
What are Shishito Peppers?
Shishito peppers are a small East Asian pepper with a wrinkly shape.
You can eat them raw, but you’ll most commonly find blistered shishito peppers or even deep fried shisito peppers.
Go ahead and eat the whole shisito pepper, seeds and all, but avoid eating the stem.
Are Shishito Peppers Spicy?
We never believed that shishito peppers were spicy until we had a single random shishito pepper at a local Austin brewery that was a scorcher.
What’s strange is that 90% of the shisito peppers on the plate were completely mild.
A shishito pepper can range from 100 – 1000 scoville units. Meaning many are not spicy, but you can encounter one with a little (or a lot) of a kick.
Although usually not as spicy as a hot jalapeno, it can be quite like a game of russian roulette.
Where to Buy Shishito Peppers?
You can usually find shishito peppers at most major grocery stores.
We usually pick up a bag from Trader Joes’ produce department.
A local asian market near you might also carry shishito peppers.
Are Shishito Peppers Good for you?
Shishito peppers are a healthier appetizer option when you see them on restaurant menus.
The shishto pepper calories on its own is only 2-3 calories per pepper.
When you cook air fryer shisito peppers at home, you’re saving some extra calories by eliminating unneeded oil.
How to Cook Shishito Peppers
There are a number of ways to cook shishitos.
You can make roasted shishito peppers by tossing them in oil in the oven.
Blistered shishito peppers can be made in a hot skillet with oil.
Feel free to batter and deep fry shishitos for a tempura-style appetizer.
If you are barbecuing, you can even whip up grilled shsito peppers. Place them on a cast iron cooktop or if grilling shisito peppers dirvectly, it helps to use a grill basket so they don’t fall into the grill.

How to Make Air Fryer Shishito Peppers
Air fryer shisito peppers couldn’t be easier! It’s a great veggie-forward air fryer recipe, just like these Air Fryer Zucchini Chips and Air Fryer Broccolini.
We like that the clean up is easier than dealing with oil splatters from using oil in a skillet.
All you need to do is spray your washed shishito peppers with an olive oil mister, then season them with salt and pepper.
Adding the peppers to a preheated air fryer will still give you that blistered exterior that you know and love.
We like to keep the seasoning very simple by just using salt and pepper, but feel free to get creative with some spices if you choose.
Once they are almost done, we glaze them in our special shisito pepper sauce.
We like to add in extra flavor by dunking the air fryer shishito peppers in a flavorful dipping sauce too.
Shishito Peppers Dipping Sauce
It only takes a few minutes to whip up our shishito pepper dipping sauce and it adds a lot of flavor to this air fryer appetizer.

Just mix 1 tablespoon sriracha with 3 tablespoons of mayonnaise.
Feel free to use this sauce for tempura shrimp, potstickers, egg rolls, or any other Asian appetizer.
