We love making unique and fun recipes for parties, and our Vietnamese shrimp toast recipe is the perfect way to introduce your friends to their new favorite finger food.
It’s crunchy, it’s savory, and it’s oh so snackable!

What is Vietnamese Shrimp Toast?
Vietnamese shrimp toast is sometimes known as banh mi chien tom, but once you have a bite you’ll only know it as one of the best appetizers you’ve ever put in your mouth.
This snack is an easy shrimp paste recipe which is spread on to baguette slices and baked on in the oven.

How to Make Shrimp Toast
For this recipe though, we chop the shrimp and other ingredients into a delicious shrimp mixture.
Once chopped fine enough, it will turn into a smooth paste that you can easily spread on a slice of bread.

We like to first spread sesame oil on the bread first, and this adds a savory level of flavor to the dish.
You should be able to easily spread a single layer of the shrimp paste with a butter knife or a spoon.
The recipe is as simple as adding your shrimp paste to thin slices of french bread, baking it, and then popping it in your mouth!

How is Vietnamese Shrimp Toast Different from Cantonese Shrimp Toast:
- Vietnamese shrimp toast is baked vs. the more well known Cantonese Chinese prawn toast is deep fried. As a result, this recipe has less calories and fat, plus it’s easier and less messy to prepare.
- The Vietnamese shrimp toast has the special addition of cheese. While many people recoil at the thought of adding cheese to seafood, somehow it really works for this recipe!
- There’s a ton of French influence in many Vietnamese dishes, so this is on baguette slices vs. white sandwich bread like you’ll find with Cantonese fried prawn toast.

Shrimp Toast Seasoning and Flavorings
For this recipe we used Prime Shrimp. This frozen shrimp comes with the option of being pre-seasoned.
It’s restaurant quality shrimp that comes peeled and deveined so there’s no messy work needed. Deveined shrimp are not only a pain to clean, they taste bad if not done correctly.
Also, the sealed bags they come in are ready right for a pot and cooks like it’s being sous vide without any equipment. Just place the shrimp into a lightly boiling pot of water, and minutes later you’re ready to eat.
You can buy Prime Shrimp on their site, or also buy them from grocery stores like Whole Foods, Central Market, Lunds & Byerlys, and so many more around the country.
Prime Shrimp has a ton of flavors, and everyone we’ve tried we’ve liked for different easy recipes. For our shrimp toast recipe try using a pre-seasoned flavor or just the plain shrimp and follow our simple recipe.
Feel free to experiment with your own flavors, add your own twists with soy sauce, fish sauce, and other spices if you’d like!

How to Store Leftover Vietnamese Shrimp Toast
We can promise you there won’t be a single piece of shrimp toast left, but if there is any left you can store them in the fridge in an airtight container for 2 days.
Just reheat them in the oven until warmed through.
