Some people dread going to the grocery store. Well we LOVE it! We even like to make a date out of it by exploring a new ethnic grocery store together. We discover new foods to cook with and even get a good giggle at some very “unique” ingredients. When we visit the local Asian market we always buy loads and loads of dumplings to steam as well as a bunch of unique spices to play with. You don’t even need to head to a specialty store in order to get Chinese Five Spice and this is the star of our recipe.
Traditionally, Chinese Five Spice Chicken is made using a whole chicken. Our dish is a simpler take on the recipe as it uses this flavorful marinade to kick up traditionally boring boneless, skinless, chicken breasts.
1-1.5 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts
Salt and pepper
1 tbsp fish sauce
4 cloves garlic, smashed
2 tbsp rice vinegar
1 tbsp Chinese Five Spice
2 tsp hot chili paste
2 tsp ginger power
1 tsp soy sauce
Start by rubbing some salt and pepper on your chicken breasts. Now it is time to make your marinade.
Mix together the fish sauce, smashed garlic cloves, rice vinegar, chili paste, ginger powder, five spice powder, and soy sauce. Add to a Ziploc bag and then add the chicken breasts. Ensure the chicken is coated in the marinade. Let the meat marinade for around 5 hours prior to cooking.
When it is time to cook, feel free to pop these right on the grill. While you are grilling, brush your meat with the marinade to coat the meat while cooking. Once your chicken is fully cooked, serve it with fresh cilantro and a side dish of your choice. We like to grill bok choy brushed in sesame oil as a fun complement!
