This tasty crab cake recipe with Ritz crackers can be made into mini hors d’oeuvres or be prepared into larger crab cakes.

These are great for a dinner party as a passed appetizer. It takes like a crab dip, but it is much easier to eat in a party setting.

Instead of using saltine crackers for these delicious crab cakes, we’re substituting them for buttery Ritz crackers!

A traditional Maryland crab cake has minimal filler and is loaded with fresh crab meat.

We did add some green onions and red bell pepper to our crab cakes for extra flavor and color.

The beauty of crab cakes is that you can add or subtract ingredients in order to make a patty that tantalize your taste buds!

  • Food Processor: Turn your crackers into crumbs in a few easy pulses by using a food processor.
  • Fish Spatula: In order to flip the crab cakes in the skillet without breaking the patties, we recommend using a slotted fish spatula.

Additional Ways to Cook Crab Cakes

We prefer to pan fry our crab cakes to get a nice texture to the exterior without overcooking the crab cake. If you are looking for other cooking options, consider these alternative methods:

  • Baked: To cook them in the oven, place the crab cakes on a sheet pan and bake them at 425 degrees F for 15-20 minutes.
  • Air Fryer: We LOVE our air fryer. If you do as well, put your crab cake patties in the basket of your air fryer, preheated to 370 degrees F and cook for 9 to 11 minutes.

This tasty crab cake recipe with ritz crackers can be made into mini hors d’oeuvres or be prepared into larger patties for a plated appetizer.

Appetizer Crab Cake Recipe with Ritz Crackers

Prep Time: 20 Minutes

Cook Time: 7 Minutes

Serves: 16-20 mini crab cakes, depending on size

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound jumbo lump crab meat
  • 2/3 cup of ritz cracker crumbs (about 16-18 crackers)
  • ¼ cup of minced green onions
  • ¼ cup diced red bell pepper
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • ¼ cup of mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp dijon mustard
  • ½ tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Old bay seasoning (or other seafood seasoning)
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon black Pepper
  • Chives, for garnish
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 16-20 whole ritz crackers, for serving as an appetizer

Directions:

  1. Using a food processor, pulse the ritz crackers until they resemble bread crumbs. If you do not have a food processor you can make crumbs by using a rolling pin on a plastic bag filled with the crackers.
  2. In a skillet, add a drizzle of olive oil and saute the green onion and bell pepper until soft, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. In a large bowl, add the crab claw meat, crushed crackers, and the sauteed onion and pepper mixture.
  4. Next, add the beaten egg, mayo, dijon, worcestershire sauce, old bay, onion powder, salt and pepper. Gently fold the crab cake mixture until well combined. If you like spicy things, you can also add in hot sauce or cayenne pepper when you add in the wet ingredients.
  5. Form the mixture into small patties, roughly the size of a ritz cracker or a golf ball and place on parchment paper. Season the outside with salt and pepper.
  6. Chill for 10 minutes.
  7. Heat up 2 tablespoons of butter in a medium heat skillet and place the crab cakes on the pan. Using a slotted spoon or fish spatula, gently flip the crab cakes once golden brown.
  8. Drizzle with your choice of sauce and top with additional green onions or chives.
  9. Serve the appetizer-sized crab cakes with a cocktail pick, or place on a ritz cracker for an easy-to-pass hors d’oeuvre. Offer sliced lemon wedges on the appetizer platter if guests like to add lemon juice to their crab cakes.

Note: Serve plain or add a drizzle of a simple remoulade sauce, cocktail sauce, simple tartar sauce, or our horseradish mayonnaise.
