Our homemade flauta recipe is the perfect way to shake up Mexican night at home.
While we love tacos, making flautas are a crispier option that is perfect for dinner or as an appetizer for the big game!
How to Make Flautas
Flautas sound fancy, but they are actually really easy to make.
Simply start with corn tortillas, add some fillings, roll it up and secure it with a toothpick.
Next, add it to a pan of frying oil that is around 350 degrees F.
Within a few minutes, your flautas should be golden brown and crispy!
The hardest part is letting them cool for a few minutes before devouring this crunchy snack.

Oil to Use for Frying Flautas
It’s important to use a high-quality oil when frying flautas.
Recently we’ve been reaching for Veri Cooking Oil. This oil is a high heat cooking oil that has a high smoke point.
This has been really helpful when we are searing our sous vide steaks in a scorching hot pan. Our neighbors appreciate not hearing our smoke alarm go off, haha!
Veri Cooking Oil is also perfect for frying because it has a light, mild flavor which lets the flavor of the corn tortillas be the star of our fried flautas.
Homemade Flautas Fillings
Our flautas recipe is super versatile. We stuffed our flautas with some homemade carnitas that we had leftover in the fridge for our first batch. You might like this Dutch Oven Carnitas recipe.
Then we made another batch filled with seasoned ground beef.
Gavin got a little wild and even made some cheese and mashed potatoes flautas aka flautas de papa!
Although chicken flautas are probably the most popular, the possibilities are endless.
(Next time we are stuffing them with our homemade barbacoa recipe or one of these popular Mexican recipes.)
Flautas Recipe
Ingredients:
- 8 corn tortillas
- 4 cups of Veri Cooking Oil
- 1 cup of filling (try ground beef, carnitas, or shredded chicken)
- 8 toothpicks
- Start by warming up your corn tortillas in a skillet. This will help them to become more pliable so they do not tear.
- Fill each tortilla with a heaping tablespoon of filling.
- Roll the tortilla and secure with a toothpick.
- Add Veri Cooking Oil to a pan until it is about 2 inches deep. Turn the burner to medium high heat, roughly 350 degrees F.
- Add the flautas to the oil, 3-4 at a time, being careful not to overcrowd the pan.
- Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until the flautas are golden brown and crispy.
- Use tongs to remove the flautas from the oil and set on a paper towel.
Note: if you’re not serving your flautas right away, keep them warm in an oven set to its lowest heat setting.
Serving Suggestion: Top with crema, pico, cilantro, avocado, and pickled red onions.

September 25, 2023 at 12:09 amThis is a taquito. A flauta uses flour tortillas. Its an accepted definition in California the birthplace of the Taquito.
“San Diego, California
Taquitos as they now exist are claimed to have been invented in San Diego, California, by Ralph Pesqueria, Jr., when customers at his tortilla factory began asking for prepared food items. The tortilla factory became El Indio Restaurant, where taquitos and other Mexican food are still served.”
I grew up eating the best taquitos from the El Indio in Riverside CA, opened by the brother of Ralph..
The best taquitos are from El Indio and arguably Cielito Lindo on Alvara street in Los Angeles across from Union Station. since 1934.
