It’s starting to get chilly in Texas, and that means we’re starting to shift from cold to hot cocktails. There’s no better hot cocktail recipe than our sugar-free hot apple cider butter rum cocktail, it’s like a warm sweater in a glass for your insides.
Our hot apple cocktail is easy to make, tasty, and most importantly to us, it’s sugar-free using our favorite natural sweetener Purecane.

We use Purecane in both the apple compote and the hot buttered rum portion of this recipe.
Can you warm up rum?
Adding the boiled water to the rum cocktail won’t get rid of the alcohol as you’re not fully cooking the rum.
It’s also recommended by rum specialists to drink rum warmed up because it brings out the natural flavoring of rum which is perfect for this cocktail.
Hot Buttered Rum
A hot buttered rum has been around since colonial days!
If you prefer a traditional hot buttered rum, just make the recipe and skip the portion where you make an apple mash.
A hot buttered rum is great on it’s own, but we enjoy the cinnamon apple addition that this cocktail provides.
Apple Hot Buttered Rum Recipe
Spiced Apple Mash Ingredients:
- 1 apple, peeled and diced
- 1 cup water
- 1 purecane packet
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 star anise pod
Spiced Apple Puree Steps:
- Bring this mix to boil.
- When the mix reaches a boil turn the heat down and cook on a heavy simmer for 20 minutes until the apples are soft.
- Use a potato masher or food processor to mash the cooked apple.
- Remove from heat and reserve for the cocktail portion of the recipe.
Hot Buttered Rum Cocktail Ingredients:
- ½ stick butter
- 4 Purecane packets
- ¼ teaspoon all spice
- ¼ teaspoon clove
- ½ teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- Apple fruit mixture
- ½ cup rum
- 1 cup boiling water
Cocktail Steps:
- Using a mixer, cream the butter, Purecane and spices.
- Add the fruit mixture and mix to combine.
- Add in rum and then stream in the boiling water.
- Mix to combine.
- Ladle into cups and serve with a garnish of apple slices, cinnamon sticks and star anise.
Apple Hot Buttered Rum Cocktail
A seasonal apple twist on a traditional hot buttered rum.
Ingredients
- 1 apple, peeled and diced
- 1 cup water
- 1 purecane packet
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 star anise pod
- ½ stick butter
- 4 Purecane packets
- ¼ teaspoon all spice
- ¼ teaspoon clove
- ½ teaspoon of ground cinnamon
