Sugar Free Apple Pie

Sharing is caring!

Let’s talk about our sugar free apple pie recipe, because it’s fall y’all!

It’s the season to escape to apple orchids or pick up some premium peak apples at the market.

We’ve been lightening up our favorite sweets with Purecane Zero-Calorie Sweetener (Karen’s down 13 pounds this year!) and we knew we wanted to create a lower calorie, homemade sugar free apple pie recipe once the temps dropped a bit this week.

We’re already transformed some of our favorite desserts to reduce the calories, like our healthy peach crisp recipe and our sugar free banana bread recipe (they are seriously the best sugar free desserts).

The next fruit to tackle was apples!

Unlike with other sweeteners, we’ve found that sugar is perfectly swapped with Purecane, especially when making fruit-based recipes.

We typically swap out all of the sugar for Purecane and reduce the amount of overall sweetener that the recipe calls for.

Your tastebuds won’t know the difference, but your waistline might!

Sugar Free Apple Pie Filling

There is a reason why the saying “easy as apple pie” exists.

It’s because apple pie is actually super easy to make.

If you’re a first-timer and you’re curious as to how to make apple pie filling, it’s as easy as mixing a few ingredients into a bowl – no cooking or boiling required!

Our homemade apple pie filling starts by peeling, coring, and chopping the apples.

We bought an apple peeler corer tool that makes this process SO easy.

As a child, using this gadget was Karen’s favorite job in the kitchen when her family harvested the apples from their backyard trees and it was time to make apple crisp or pie.

Once you prepare your apples, you’ll toss them in lemon juice to help prevent the apples from browning, then mix in Purecane sweetener, flour, cinnamon, salt and nutmeg.

Once we toss in our apple pie spice recipe, we also stir in a little bit of vanilla extract.

Lattice Apple Pie

When it comes to healthy apple desserts, we’re all about the lattice apple pie.

A lattice top pie actually uses less dough than if the pie was covered, saving you some calories.

We also love how a lattice top is so much more beautiful than a traditional pie crust. We tend to eat with our eyes, afterall.

Lattice Apple Pie

If you require a gluten-free apple pie, you can swap out the crust to meet your dietary needs.

We added some extra flair to our low sugar apple pie by imprinting a design on the pie dough with this handy tool we picked up from a carpenter in Austria (this storybook town was so dreamy, add it to your bucket list!), but also found that the cookie rollers are available on Amazon.

Here’s an embossed rolling pin similar to ours.

Simply firmly roll the imprinting, slice your dough into ½ inch thick strips, and gently lay the lattice on your apple-filled pie crust.

Made it. Could have cooked about 10 minutes longer. My diabetic husband loved it and it made me happy to see him enjoy a sugarfree sweet treat. Thank you so much!
