As Jen Davies says, “You don’t have to travel far to find the greatest experiences life has to offer.” With all of our recent travel, we started thinking that in order to feel on “vacation” and to experience an escape we had to hop on a plane, but our recent quick trip to Texas wine country 100% proved us wrong. Whether you’re coming from Austin, like us, or another city in Texas, we couldn’t recommend this mini-vacation enough. We came back to town extremely relaxed, centered, and of course, carrying multiple bottles of wine.
Relax at the top Texas Wine Country Vineyards
To be totally honest Texas wines were never our favorite because from what we tried they weren’t the highest quality were typically at a higher cost. After discovering William Chris’ unfiltered sparkling rose at a local restaurant here in Austin, Texas, we became big fans of this winemaker. Better yet, they are located a quick 80 minutes from our home. It is a perfect getaway for couples. Be sure to schedule your wine tasting ahead of time as this is a very popular winery. We recommend that you go through a full tasting and then buy a bottle, sit on their patio, and enjoy the hill country sunset. William Chris also has live music on select days, which adds to the charm of the grounds.
In terms of wine, here are a few of our favorites: All of the roses are terrific. In terms of red wine the Enchante, and both of Mourverde wines are fantastic. 10352 E US Highway 290, Hye, TX 78635, United States
Looking for other wineries to visit? Just down the road is Hye Meadow Winery and Horn Winery (psst… it’s also a distillery!). A great spot for lunch in between all this vino is the Hye Market.
Get pampered at a Fredericksburg Spa
The Willow Room is a bit off of the beaten path, about 20 minutes from downtown Fredericksburg, but was absolutely worth the trip. This retreat was the most intimate spa we have ever experienced. The 2-hour romance package meant that the ENTIRE spa was dedicated to only us.
We started by slipping into robes and slippers in the changing room. Next, we walked out to the awe-inspiring spa area where whirlpool hot tubs, saunas, and a fruit and cheese tray were at our disposal for the initial hour. Finally, we laid out on our couple’s massage tables facing the sprawling hill country views. They offer a number of romance packages based on your needs. 700 Platfoot-Snow Road, Willow City, TX 78675
Stay at the charming cottages at Gastehaus Schmidt
There are a few reasons why we love Gastehaus Schmidt: All of their cottages are super adorable and unique: no two are decorated the same! They also have a variety of options based on your needs whether you need a kitchen space or the full bed and breakfast experience. This Texas hill country resort even has some pet-friendly rentals!
We stayed at El Jefe on this trip, a Spanish-style cottage with a king bed and cozy fireplace. We were greeted with a bottle of local wine as well as some chocolates. Our favorite part of El Jefe?? The upstairs! We were in awe that the top level of this rental was dedicated to a huge hot tub for two, overlooking an adorable Juliet balcony.
We were so cozy at our cottage that we decided rather than going out to a fancy dinner on the town, it was best to curl up by the fire, take a long bubble bath and order pizza delivery! The pizza we ordered was from West End Pizza Company. It was clearly homemade and similar to Austin’s Home Slice Pizza. For dining options in Fredericksburg, Vaudeville is our favorite brunch/lunch spot. It is a cute cafe on the bottom of their stylish furniture store. For evening dining, we’ve heard great things about the food at Otto’s German Bistro and will be sure to try it next time we’re in town.
On a recent trip to Fredericksburg, we rented another cottage from Gastehaus Schmidt. Just one block from Main Street, this house featured traditional architecture, a gorgeous porch with rocking chairs and an outdoor hot tub. This two bedroom is perfect for a double date or getaway with other friends.
If you have more time to spare while in Fredericksburg, there are numerous antique shops, art galleries, and museums to explore. Next time we go back we can’t wait to tour the Pacific War Museum and German Heritage Museum. Additionally, for the adventurous couples out there, you are in close distance to Enchanted Rock. Hike to the top to get a great view of Texas Hill Country.
For a anniversary or Valentines Day, consider surprising your sweetie with a getaway to Texas Wine Country.
