Sharing is caring!

We’re trying to eat a little lighter at the start of the year so we whipped up this Hawaiian Salmon Poke Recipe.

We’ve always been fans of poke because it’s a quick and fast way to get in our sushi fix.

When we traveled to Maui, we immersed ourselves in Hawaiian poke (Don’t miss our article on the 27 Best Things to Eat in Maui) from dedicated poke shops, to food trucks, to top restaurants on the island.

What is Traditional Hawaiian Poke?

Many people think poke is from Japan, like sushi is, but it is actually from Hawaii right here in the United States.

Poke is the Hawaiian word for the term “to slice”.

Traditional poke originated as a popular Hawaiian dish when fishermen seasoned the excess cut off pieces of fish filets and ate it as a snack.

Poke is raw fish that has been skinned, deboned, and cut into small pieces.

Then, it is seasoned and served with maui onions, which are a local sweet onion.

As poke has become more popular you’ll find it served with other ingredients like avocado, cucumber, carrot, edamame, wasabi, kani salad or red pepper flakes.

Essentially poke is a deconstructed sushi roll, which is a great appetizer or healthy lunch.

Type of Fish to Use for Poke

Poke almost always uses raw fish (but we did find a Hawaiian food truck that served fried salmon cubes with their poke).

You’ll find poke that serves raw salmon, yellowfin tuna, or raw ahi tuna. All of the raw fish is sushi-grade fish, which ensures it is safe to eat.

When preparing this recipe, be sure to buy sushi-grade salmon at the grocery store. It will be in the frozen section or frozen at the fish counter.

In case you can’t find it, an easy substitute is to buy sashimi grade fish already sliced in the local grocery store sushi area.

Or, you can always find fresh sushi-grade salmon at the Japanese grocery store.

Are Salmon Poke Bowls Healthy?

One thing we love about this Hawaiian Salmon Poke recipe is that it’s full of flavor but also good for you.

Eating more fish is a good way to add Omega 3 fatty acids to your diet.

Unlike fried fish, you are able to add in vitamins and minerals without the extra oil and calories.

This salmon poke recipe is low carb and low calorie, which is a great option if you are looking to eat lighter and enjoy a meal that won’t weigh you down.
