Ginger Beer Substitutions:

If you don’t have ginger beer sitting around the house do not worry, here are a few alternatives.

  • Ginger Ale – typically very similar to ginger beer, but sometimes with a bit more sugar so the sweet flavor may need to be more balanced.  So with this you may want to balance the drink with less simple syrup and add in some fresh ginger in your shaker to get more of a ginger hit.
  • Club soda – Club soda is an easy swap, just add some fresh ginger and more sugar to the shaker.
  • Tonic water – If you love the flavor of tonic water it will definitely give this drink a slight flavor twist, just add fresh ginger into the cocktail shaker for the ginger hit of flavor

Simple Syrup Substitutions:

Making simple syrup at home is just equal parts of sugar to water, and bringing it to a light boil.  It’s crazy easy, but if you don’t want to make it here are some easy swaps.

  • White sugar or brown sugar – if you don’t want to make a simple syrup you can toss in a tablespoon per drink into the shaker, and that should be enough to balance the sourness of the lemon juice
  • Maple syrup – We’ve been turning to maple syrup for our cocktails recently to give an interesting deeper sweetness twist to our drinks.

Different ways to upgrade this Irish lemonade recipe:

  • Muddle fresh fruit like blueberries, raspberries, or strawberries to make it a flavored lemonade.
  • Swap the lemon juice with lime juice for a limeade.
  • Shake hard with an egg white to add foam and creaminess.
  • Don’t tell anyone, but you could also try this summer drink with a scotch or bourbon, you don’t need to make an extra cost if you have another whiskey at home.
