The cuisine is a new American bistro, with hints of Peruvian touches. They have a strong focus on seasonal and fresh local ingredients, so the menu changes frequently.
One of their constants that’s a must-order item is their house-baked sourdough focaccia.
It was truly one of the best focaccia’s we’ve ever had outside of Italy.
It’s amazing on its own, but the soft bread also paired perfectly with their harissa braised wild boar ragout. We were able to mop up leftover sauce with a piece of focaccia like the Italians do fare la scarpetta.
Their hamachi ceviche tiradito comes from the owner’s roots in Peru.
We know a dish is truly great and authentic when it instantly transports us back to a past trip in Lima, Peru. The country is very special to us because it is where we got engaged.
To finish the meal, we loved ordering their wood oven charred stone fruit.
It’s technically an entree, but we would easily order it for dessert without blinking. The fruit was so sweet and fresh, and was contrasted perfectly with pickled fennel and yogurt.
This is one of those romantic restaurants where the conversation can stretch on long after the plates have been cleared.
And honestly, that is the whole point. A romantic getaway should include plenty of quality time, a sunset, and a lingering dinner is a pretty perfect way to find it.

We were even treated to a jaw dropping sunset during our visit to Common’s Beach.
Fall brings a softer energy to the beach. The busy summer season has passed, but the weather can still be lovely enough to enjoy being outdoors. It is an opportunity to experience Tahoe without feeling hurried.

For couples like us who believe food is one of the most important parts of travel, Smoke Door offers another reason to linger in Tahoe.

Outside of Lake Tahoe, Japan is one of our favorite places in the world. Smoke Door is not only authentic, their original location is in Japan still to this day.
The meal kicked off with crispy rice unlike we’ve ever had before.
From there you know this restaurant is Michelin worthy, because they fly in both premium sushi grade fish from Toyosu Fish Market and wagyu from Japan multiple times a week.
We love that in their multicourse experience you will try so many dishes you won’t find at any Japanese restaurant in the world.
A favorite that we’d never guess when looking at the menu is their finishing clay pot rice dish, which evolves with the meal as they have you eat it in three different ways.
Dishes are crafted with intention. From selecting your own sake glass for your beverage pairing, and tableside presentation of creative dishes, it’s more than a meal, it’s an experience without a long flight to Japan.
Hike Eagle Rock then have breakfast at Minglewood
Eagle Rock is proof that a hike does not need to take all day to deliver a big payoff.
This relatively short hike on the west shore leads to sweeping views of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding mountains.
It is a great choice for couples like us who want beautiful mountain views without committing an entire day for a major expedition.
Fall is an exceptional time to visit as the parking lot is empty and it feels like you have the trail to yourself.
Go early if you can. There is something magical about starting the day together outdoors, when the air is crisp and the lake is still waking up.
Once you have taken in the views, head toward Tahoe City and refuel at Minglewood.

For dinner we loved the seared sea scallops with sweet corn sauce. The scallops were massive in size, perfectly seared, yet tender on the inside.
