We’re experts on the top 10 wineries in Fredericksburg, Tx because we have tasted our way through over 40 of the Fredericksburg and surrounding area vineyards.
As a result, we have studied Texas Wine Country and wines of this region for quite a number of years.
We even traveled to Lubbock, Texas to meet wine growers in the Texas High Plains; many Fredericksburg wineries use those grapes as part of their winemaking as well.
You will not find a more extensive review of fredericksburg wineries and Texas hill country vineyards than this guide!
There are so many wineries in Fredericksburg, Tx that it’s hard to keep track of them all.
We’re such avid wine connoisseurs and lovers of Texas Hill country, that we bought our wine country home that we rent as a Fredericksburg Bed and Breakfast.
Whenever we are visiting our vacation home, we spend our time wine tasting searching for the best wineries in Fredericksburg.
We realized that there is not an all-encompassing list of all Fredericksburg wineries, so we made it a mission to compile this information for you and taste our way through town.
In terms of ratings, we judged Fredericksburg wineries both on ambiance as well as wines.
Note that wine tasting is 100% subjective. Typically we enjoy dry white wines and fruit forward red wines.
Know that if you enjoy sweet wines, you might prefer some of the wines from this list more than what we may have rated them.
The highway 290 wine trail actually stretches further than just Fredericksburg. Wineries are in Stonewall, Hye, and Johnson City, so we included those wineries as well. It’s just too unfair to not include a favorite vineyard on Highway 290 just because it’s beyond city limits.
We will do our best to keep this list updated as wineries open and close. As we continue to sip our way through town we will update the blog post with our recent tasting notes.
We organized our list of Fredericksburg wineries based on the vineyards we’ve tasted and in order of preference.
The wineries on the bottom are our “still to sip list” for your reference.
1. Signor Vineyards
4.5 / 5 Wines
5 / 5 Ambiance
Signor Vineyards is one of our favorite wineries in Texas Hill Country. Sip wine on their gorgeous grounds, which are very instagramable. There is a tasting room near a pond, a trellis leading to a gift shop covered in greenery, and even a wine barn. Signor specializes in both wines from Texas and wines from Oregon. Without a doubt it’s a perfect place for a girls trip as it’s so spacious or even for a romantic date on the vineyard. In terms of wine, we really enjoyed the roussanne, which was light and fresh since it was aged in stainless steel. We think the true star is the rosé of grenache. It’s delish!
362 Livesay Ln, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
2. Pontotoc Vineyard Weingarten
4.5 / 5 Wines
4.75 / 5 Ambiance
We absolutely love this Fredericksburg winery. Pontotoc Vineyard Weingarten feels like a secret garden right on Fredericksburg’s Main Street. They showcase terrific red wines that they produce in a small little Texas ghost town just right down the road. During warmer months, you can’t go wrong when ordering their homemade sangria. Pair it with a picnic basket with homemade goodies crafted by the winemaker’s wife. Our only complaint is that this weingarten is only open on weekends!
320 W Main St, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
3. Narrow Path Winery
4.25 / 5 Wines
4.5 / 5 Ambiance
Narrow Path Winery is one of our new favorite Fredericksburg wineries! They offer two locations, one on downtown Fredericksburg Main Street, which we have not visited yet, as well as their vineyard estate. Their actual vineyard is a bit off the beaten path, it is about a five minute drive south off the Highway 290 Wine Trail, but that is what makes it so special. The tasting room is modern, yet cozy. The patio is expansive with lots of comfortable outdoor furniture and umbrellas facing lush gardens and vines. It is dog friendly on the weekdays but not on the weekends. We were also so impressed by their wines. The Carignan rosé was one of the most interesting wines we tasted in Fredericksburg. It is deep in color, tasted almost like a pinot noir, but was still refreshing. The wine club membership at Narrow Path is also really spectacular. They offer two free glasses of wine daily, both at the estate vineyard location and at the Main Street tasting room.
6331 S Ranch Rd 1623, Stonewall, TX 78671 and 113 E Main St, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
4. William Chris Vineyards
4 / 5 Wines
4.5 / 5 Ambiance
William Chris Vineyards really helped to bring attention to Texas wine country as the wines began to improve over the past few years. In fact, visiting William Chris vineyards was the conduit to our Fredericksburg TX winery obsession. As William Chris has grown in fame, so has their vineyard with a new gorgeous tasting room that has recently opened. This is a great winery to do a tasting and then buy a bottle and have a picnic on the grounds.
10352, US-290, Hye, TX 78635
5. Becker Vineyards
4 / 5 Wines
4.5 / 5 Ambiance
We’re wine club members of Becker Vineyards due to the gorgeous vineyard, huge selection of wines, and also the convenient downtown tasting room. During the spring time the fields next to the patio are filled with lavender and rows of poppies in full bloom. In terms of wines, we love their rosé wine options as well as their Ranger Hayes blend and most of their cabernet wines. Both the vineyard and the downtown tasting room offer a patio and a gift shop. Wine club members get free tasting or glasses of wine daily!
307 US-87, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
6. Augusta Vin
3.8 / 5 Wines
4.5 / 5 Ambiance
August Vin is not too far from downtown Fredericksburg but you are transported by their beautiful patios and stunning tasting room. The menu has two options, a regular tasting menu and the premium tasting menu. Gavin and I both chose to taste a different menu in order to be exposed to more of their wines. Overall we thought there were great wines on the premium tasting menu, but the regular menu was just so-so. If you visit this winery, spring for the more expensive tasting.
140 Augusta Vin Ln, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
7. Crowson Winery
4.25 / 5 Wines
4 / 5 Ambiance
Crowson is the best pit spot on your way from Austin to Fredericksburg. Located in downtown Johnson City, we have a lot of great memories sitting down with Henry the winemaker, tasting the wine creations he made with his father, and listening to his vinyl collection. The indoor tasting room is small and cozy, looking like Chip and Joanna Gaines left their touch on the interior. A small patio is also available outdoors. Be sure to try some of the red wines; the malbec is one of our favorites.
102 N Ave G, Johnson City, TX 78636
8. Untamed
4 / 5 Wines
4 / 5 Ambiance
We’re big fans of the new winery, Untamed. This couple duo were corporate winemakers for some very notable labels, but decided to go off and do their own thing. Thus, Untamed was born. Typically, we usually don’t love the Cabernet Franc varietal, but we were floored by how delicious their Cab Franc was! We love how Untamed offers a food menu with a wood fire pizza oven on site. Try some unique gastronomic pizzas like the South African, which is topped with prosciutto, bacon, peppadew, and sliced bananas. Yeah, you heard that right. The Fumé Blanc was incredibly tropical and fruity without the acidity of a sauvignon blanc. Try pairing it with the Meyer Lemon pizza.
202 Ranch Road 1320 Johnson City Texas 78636
9. Cross Mountain Vineyards
4.25 / 5 Wines
3.75 / 5 Ambiance
This is another spot where we are wine club members! It is the best wine club option for locals and tourists who frequent Fredericksburg often. Each day wine club members get two complimentary wine tastings or two glasses of wine. They specialize in making and importing wines from all over Italy. We love how there are lots of sparkling wine options. We also love the Negroamaro red wine. In the coming months Cross Mountain will be opening up a tasting room in the new Albert Hotel right down Main Street. We can’t wait!
308 E Main St, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
10. Coordinates Vineyards
4 / 5 wines
4 / 5 Ambiance
Coordinates Vineyards is nestled at the start of Fredericksburg Main Street in an old blacksmith shop from the 1870s. The tasting room honors the heritage of the building with cozy, modern furnishings. There is also a small back patio lined in grapevines. Coordinates is an importer of wines from South Africa. We have a special love for South African wines after spending a few days in Elgin, South Africa prior to our trip to Cape Town. Overall we really like the wines as Coordinates, specifically the Pinotage. Tastings are an approachable $15 for 5 wines and you get your tasting fee waived if you purchase a bottle, which was a great deal. We also love that this tasting room stays open much later than most wineries!
417 E Main St, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
Other Wineries in Order of Rating and Preference:
Ab Astrisis
4 / 5 Wines
3.75 / 5 Ambiance
Ab Astrisis is latin for “From the Stars”. Nestled on seven acres, this vineyard is a very sweet place. They offer a small tasting room and a vast covered patio, sadly the nicer side of the patio was just reserved for wine club members. We thought they offered really nice wines, but at the time of the year we visited we were overrun by a lot of bugs which dampered the experience a bit.
320 Klein Rd, Stonewall, TX 78671
Slate Mill Wine Collective
3.75 / 5 Wines
4 / 5 Ambiance
Slate Mill Wine Collective is a great spot to enjoy a number of Texas winemakers all in one spot. Grab a seat at the nice large patio and either enjoy a glass from Slate Mill’s line, or try a smaller winemaker who might not be big enough to have their own tasting room yet. You can even collaborate with Slate Mill to make your own custom wines for your wedding or special event! A favorite memory of ours at this winery is their wine stomping event during harvest time.
4222 S State Hwy 16, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
Inwood Estates Vineyards Winery and Bistro
4.1 / 5 wines
3.5 / 5 Ambiance
Inwood Estates was awarded on the list of top 101 wineries of America in 2015, 2016, and 2017. They offer some big, bold red wines, but are at a higher price point compared to most Fredericksburg TX wineries. The Tempranillo Cabernet is our favorite wine. This spot is one of our favorite picks on the Highway 290 Wine Shuttle route.
10303 US-290, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
Westcave Cellars
3.8 / 5 Wines
3.8 / 5 Ambiance
Who wouldn’t want to sip wine while watching dozens of hummingbirds zoom around? Westcave Cellars is a cozy spot for beer and wine fans alike. You can choose between a wine tasting or a beer flight, or heck, do both. Our favorite wine is actually their Passport Port Wine, pair it with their salted caramel peanut butter pretzel bites and thank us later.
683 Ranch Rd 1320, Johnson City, TX 78636
Rhinory
3.5 / 5 Wines
4 / 5 Ambiance
This new winery in Fredericksburg is wild, literally. The winery is actually a Rhinory with a live rhino roaming the preserve grounds of the tasting room. Rhinory features both wines from South Africa as well as Texas. Choose from three different tasting menus: the standard tasting menu for $25, the premium tasting menu for $35, and the Keras tasting menu for $60. Overall we thought the wines were a bit overpriced for the quality. The ambiance is really unique, but the grounds were still under construction during our visit. If you are an animal lover or traveling with kids this unique spot will be sure to make you smile.
13112 US-290, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
Perspective Cellars
3.5 / 5 Wines
4 / 5 Ambiance
One of the cutest tasting rooms in downtown Fredericksburg! This spot offers cozy decor in an old building from the 1800s and even a little patio to people-watch folks on Main Street. The wines at Perspective are brought in from Texas to California to Europe, so this isn’t really a winery, but a tasting room curated by the sommeliers at Perspective Cellars. They should be able to find you a glass that suits your taste.
247 E Main St, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
Wildseed Farms Winery
3.5 / 5 wines
4 / 5 ambiance
The tasting room at Wildseed Farms is surrounded by the plant nursery. Based on the season you may find rows of wildflowers in the field. We went during the fall and we’re greeted with a massive amount of pumpkins of all varieties. The ambiance of the nursery is superior to the actual tasting room, which was a large wooden barn with very country rustic decor. Wildseed Vineyards has live music most weekends. The wines are primarily dry, so keep that in mind if you’re visiting with any sweet wine drinkers. The brand new Vermentino showcased flavors of green melon, crème brûlée and pineapple. It was a favorite wine that we tasted. The primrose rosé is also delicious, it is made with estate grown Mourvèdre grapes, it tastes like strawberry without being sweet.
100 Legacy Dr, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
Lost Draw Cellars
3.7 / 5 Wine
3.7 / 5 Ambiance
Lost Draw Cellars is just a few blocks from downtown but they have a bigger patio than any other Main Street downtown options. While the location isn’t the most charming spot since it’s located behind the local HEB instead of on an estate, but we love that they offer live music, fire pits, and a sausage board. We’ve even attended a wine blending class at Lost Draw and it was a really fun experience.
113 E Park St, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
Ron Yates
4 / 5 Wines
3.25 / 5 Ambiance
Ron Yates is an unsuspecting terrific wine pick, just on the edge of the beginning of the 290 wine route. Situated on 15 acres, Ron Yates is actually the sister vineyard to Spicewood Vineyards. The sparkling pet nat rosé was one of our favorite wines in Hill Country but it is in limited supply and hard to get your hands on.
6676 W US Highway 290, Johnson City, TX 78636
Baron’s Creek Vineyard
3.5 / 5 Wines
3.75 / 5 Ambiance
This is another top pick if you are looking where to stop when on the Highway 290 Wine Shuttle touring Fredericksburg TX wineries. Baron’s Creek Vineyard offers a great outdoor area with a patio in the back. Overall the winery is cute, especially near the fountains. Not all the wines are our favorite, but we tasted a good red wine here so usually order a glass vs. going through the full tasting.
5865 E, US-290, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
The Club at Baron’s Creekside
3.5 / 5 Wines
3.75 / 5 Ambiance
Unrelated to Baron’s Creek Vineyards, The Club at Baron’s Creekside produces their own wine through their partner Kuhlman Cellars. Confused yet? All you should know is if you are looking to taste wine in the evening, head to the Club at Baron’s Creekside. You’ll relax next to firepits and blankets during the cooler months and listen to live music while sipping their wines.
316 Goehmann Ln, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
Foyt Winery
3.5 / 5 Wines
3.75 / 5 Ambiance
Foyt Winery is a new Fredericksburg winery from the son of legendary race car driver A.J. Foyt. This new winery is part tasting room, part race car museum. The winery is filled with racing memorabilia which is unique and pretty interesting, especially if you are into racing. There is still construction going on and Foyt is planning on planting vines in the next few years which will improve the ambiance. All wines are brought in from California. We enjoyed both of the rosés the most. They do offer a blanc de blanc sparkling wine, which was a bit oakier than we preferred. You’ll find a number of red wines, including a pinot noir and four cabs on the menu.
38 Jenschke Ln, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
Das Peach Haus
2.5 / 5 Wines
4.5 / 5 Ambiance
Das Peach Haus is part jelly shop, part wine tasting room, and part peaceful lakeside oasis. You can taste the Fischer & Wieser Culinary Adventure Wine Collection for their house wine. These are sweeter wines, which aren’t our favorite, but we like the fact that they have cooking classes and a beautiful outdoor area. Hot tip, if you’re sick of wine get a cocktail from the Dietz distillery next door and enjoy it by the lake!
1406 S US Highway 87, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
Safari Winery
3.75 / 5 Wines
3.5 / 5 Ambiance
Safari Winery is a wine importer of wines from South Africa, Argentina and Chile. The interior is lined with taxidermy of wild animals that the owner hunted, so if taxidermy mounts aren’t your thing, head to the large back patio instead. Overall we enjoyed some wines more than others as the whites were a bit sweeter than we typically enjoy. We really liked the Carmenere from Chile.
5479 E, US-290, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
Elk Store
3 / 5 Wines
4 / 5 Ambiance
The Elk Store offers a chic, loungy ambiance right on downtown Main Street. This spot is a distillery on one side and a tasting room on the other. Overall we like the Elk Store not for their wines, but for their oh-so-delicious espresso martini and their late hours (which can be a rare thing in Fredericksburg!)
327 E Main St, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
Pedernales Cellars
3.5 / 5 Wines
3.5 / 5 Ambiance
Pedernales Cellars offers Texas-grown Spanish and Rhone wine varieties. While in the summer months you might want to sip wine on their large front lawn area, we like to visit in the fall/winter to pick up their holiday Glogg, a spiced wine that is perfect to heat up and serve for the holidays.
2916 Upper Albert Rd, Stonewall, TX 78671
Texas Heritage Vineyard
3.5 / 5 Wines
3.3 / 5 Ambiance
Texas Heritage Vineyard brings all the Texas vibes. Although the décor is a little rustic and outdated, we appreciated that the winery has a large patio out back. This winery has some estate wines on the menu and also some award winners from Texas wine competitions. This is also a spot on the 290 Wine Shuttle which makes it a convenient Fredericksburg TX winery to visit.
3245 E US, US-290, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
Hye Meadow Winery
3.2 / 5 Wine
3.5 / 5 Ambiance
Hye Meadow Winery is a laid back winery that has donkeys that live on property. Sip wine with Justina and Ferreri the donkey while you are visiting or just watch them while you relax on the winery’s patio area. While you there get a glass of their award winning Boooom wine.
10257 W US Highway 290, Hye, TX 78635
Arrowhead Creek Vineyard
3.25 / 5 Wines
3/25 / 5 Ambiance
Arrowhead Creek Vineyard is only a few years old, but it feels like a rustic Texas tasting room. The outdoor pergola area is cute with greenery and hanging patio lights, but the tasting room feels a bit like a hunting lodge. Our favorite wine was the Campfire Red, and we thought the others needed a little bit more time in the bottle to develop. 13502 E, US-290, Stonewall, TX 78671
Kalasi Cellars
3.2 / 5 Wines
3 / 5 Ambiance
While we didn’t love the white wines from Kalasi, there were a few red varietals that were estate wines from Texas High Plains that were enjoyable. Rather than getting a tasting, we’d recommend just having a glass of the 2017 Tannat or the 2017 Malbec.
414 Goehmann Ln, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
Alexander Vineyards
4/5 Wines
2/5 Ambiance
Looking for a break from Texas grapes? Why not taste some wines from Europe? Alexander Vineyards produces and blends European wines overseas and brings them to Fredericksburg.
We were fans of the Graves Blanc, a blend of Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc from Bordeaux.
Alexander Vineyards is currently building a new tasting room, designed by a top architect that did the Austin library. In the meantime the patio is quaint and it sits upon a field. The overall ambiance will go up once the lasting room is open May 2022.
6360 Goehmann Lane, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
Horn Winery and Tasting Room
3 / 5 Wine
3 / 5 Ambiance
Horn Winery is a three-for-one since they also produce cider and it is also home to Azeo distillery. If you are with some members of your group that don’t enjoy wine, this might be a good stop to meet everyone’s needs.
9953 W US Highway 290, Hye, TX 78635
Wedding Oak Winery
3 / 5 Wines
3 / 5 Ambiance
We reallllly wanted to love Wedding Oak Winery because the labels were so adorable (“Bridal Blush” and “Something Blue”). In fact, we were considering ordering the wine for our wedding reception. However most of the cheeky wines At Wedding Oak Winery were just too sweet for our palate. If you enjoy sweet wines, like some of our family does, this might be your place. If you prefer dry wines, they have a dry tasting menu as well, however, only the Castanet Rose wine really stood out to us.
6009 Suite B US, Hwy 290 E, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
Heath Sparkling Wines
3 / 5 Wines
3 / 5 Ambiance
We truly wanted to be fans of Heath Sparkling Wines as we both love a glass full of bubbles. Sadly, the brand spanking new, high-dollar tasting room missed the mark for us. The parking attendant was quite rude, reservations are required for tastings so we felt like we were being rushed through the experience, and the whole tasting felt more like a wine club sales pitch rather than a place to enjoy and appreciate the wines.
10591 East US, US-290, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
Grape Creek Vineyards
3 / 5 Wines
2 / 5 Ambiance
Grape Creek Vineyards also offers a vineyard location and a Main Street tasting room. Full disclosure, we have only visited the tasting room and not the full vineyard. Regardless, the downtown tasting room was pretty traditional, but only with standing options, no seating. As a result it was not as cozy of a vibe and felt more transactional. In terms of the wines, our favorite pick was their Pinot Grigio and the Cabernet blend. Overall we found the wines are less bold and much lighter than other vineyards.
223 E Main St, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
Andreucci Wine Room
2 / 5 Wines
2 / 5 Ambiance
This downtown tasting room is centrally located across from Admiral Nimitz Gallery on Main Street. Andreucci Wine Room is actually a wine importer, bringing in wines from Italy. While the location is walkable, there is no patio sadly. This winery is not our favorite as the very rustic Italian décor feels a bit dark and outdated and the wines were lackluster, in our opinion.
401 E Main St #1c, Fredericksburg, TX 78624 \
Sister Creek Vineyards
2 / 5 Wines
2 / 5 Ambiance
This winery is located in a restored 1885 cotton gin and the building still feels very heritage. In our opinion we didn’t think Sister Creek Vineyards had the best wines, but the tasting was more affordable than most wineries and as a plus it is located across the street from Blackboard BBQ, one of our favorite barbecue spots in the country.
1142 Sisterdale Rd, Boerne, TX 78006
290 Wine Castle
1.5 / 5 Wines
2 / 5 Ambiance
We should have known that driving down Highway 290 and spotting a massive newly-constructed medieval castle was likely a gimmicky spot for tourists, however when we were driving and Karen said “wowwww a wine castle…” Gavin did a u-turn to check it out. The wines at 290 Wine Castle were probably the worst wines we’ve tasted in Hill County. We dumped them in the spitoon, paid the tasting fee, and left the oddly decorated “castle” as fast as we could.
