It’s crazy how a few simple ingredients can transform ground beef into an amazing burger.
Our gourmet burger recipe is elevated with a Smoked Burger patty, smoked mushrooms in garlic butter, and ooey gooey melted swiss cheese.
If you don’t have a smoker at home, don’t fret. The addition of our Horseradish Mayonnaise Recipe will make your mushroom swiss burger sing, no matter how you cook your homemade burgers.
This is truly a burger dream!
Mushroom Swiss Burger Toppings
All the magic happens between the top bun and the bottom bun, so don’t skimp on quality ingredients.
Bakery-fresh, buttery brioche buns really help to compliment the mushrooms and the slice of cheese.
You can add your favorite condiments but our swiss mushroom burgers are composed with a beef burger patty topped with slow cooked caramelized onions, a slice of swiss cheese, homemade Smoked Mushrooms, some peppery arugula, and our incredible Horseradish Mayonnaise Recipe.
We also like to nestle all these flavors on a toasted bun that’s been brushed with melted butter.
It’s seriously burger perfection. Add in french fries or a side salad and you’ve got a delectable meal.
Feel free to adjust any toppings to satisfy your cravings.
We love burgers because they are so versatile. The flavor combinations are endless!
Some of our other favorite burger combos are the iconic Juicy Lucy Burger (from Karen’s hometown in Minnesota), our Queso Poblano Taco Burger Recipe, and even a Cheeseburger Pizza Recipe that has been loaded with pickles and special sauce.

Best Mushrooms to Use for a Mushroom Swiss Burger
While plain white button mushrooms might be the most common type of mushroom to use for a mushroom swiss burger, if you’re looking for the best burger, pick another type of delicious mushrooms.
For this mushroom swiss burger recipe, we substituted button mushrooms for baby bellas.
They have all the taste of portobello mushrooms but in a smaller format that’s easier to eat.
We opted for sliced mushrooms to ensure every single burger bite has the taste of sauteed mushrooms.
You can always sauté your mushrooms in a saucepan, but for a truly good burger, we smoked our mushrooms with garlic, butter, and fresh thyme.
Just start with fresh mushrooms, add them to a skillet with butter and smoke it at a low temperature. Halfway through the smoking process add your minced garlic and destemmed fresh thyme.

We know you’ll love our recipe that features baby bellas, but feel free to use a mushroom mixture if you’re looking for a variety of flavors and textures on your mushroom swiss burger.
Mushroom Swiss Burger Temperature Chart
If you’re like us, you think that the one thing that can ruin your burger is dry, overcooked hamburger patties.
To ensure you have the best burger, use a meat thermometer to determine when your cooked burger is fully cooked to your desired temp.
We love using this wireless thermometer that has an alarm.
It’s a great way you can set it and forget it. The thermometer will beep when your targeted internal temperature is reached.
If you haven’t bought a wireless thermometer yet, just temp your burgers from time to time with a traditional meat thermometer.
If it has not reached your desired internal temperature of the burgers, give it more time before making your burgers.

Mushroom Swiss Burger Recipe
Prep Time: 10 Minutes
Cook Time: 60 Minutes
Serves: 4 Burgers
Ingredients:
- 1 pound 80/20 ground beef
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 4 slices of Swiss Cheese
- 8 oz. of Smoked Mushrooms (or sauteed)
- 4 cloved garlic, minced
- 3 steams of fresh thyme, destemmed
- 2 large sweet onions for caramelized onions, sliced thin
- ½ cup Arugula
- 4 tablespoon of our Horseradish Mayonnaise Sauce
- 4 Burger buns
- 7 tbsp of butter, divided
Directions:
- If you decide to make our Smoked Burger Recipe, preheat your smoker or pellet grill to 225 degrees.
- Mix together the onion powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper.
- Form patties out of the ground beef and season your beef patties with the seasoning.
- Place the beef patties on the smoker’s grill grates
- Optional: If making our Smoked Mushroom Recipe put the 8oz of sliced baby bella mushrooms in small cast iron with 4 tablespoons butter, smoke for 15 minutes then mix in the 4 cloves minced garlic and 3 springs of thyme also on the smoker. You can also make this on the stove top.
- Meanwhile, make your caramelized onions by adding two thinly sliced sweet onions to a saucepan with 1 tbsp butter on low heat. Stirring occasionally, your onions will sweat out moisture over the next 35-45 minutes. Once they are golden brown and soft, your caramelized onions are ready.
- Do not flip the burgers, smoke continuously until the internal temperature reaches your desired internal temperature. This took our grill about 60 minutes.
- Add sliced delicious swiss cheese and cook for 2-3 minutes until melted, then remove from the grill.
- Butter and toast your buns. Top with arugula, the smoked burger patty, caramelized onion, smoked mushrooms and horseradish mayo.
